Gorrontz-Olano

Let’s explore Gorrontz-Olano

Gorrontz-Olano is one of the smallest villages in Ultzama: a quiet, idyllic place. Because it sits at a considerable elevation, it offers visitors the chance to enjoy wonderful views.

As you enter the village, you will see buildings that maintain a distinctive architectural style, characteristic of Ultzama. The name Gorronz-Olano (for Gorronz) is used interchangeably in the 1802 dictionary of the Royal Academy of History. It borders Lizaso to the north, Eguillor and Aróstegui to the south, Guelbenzu to the east and Beunza to the west.

History / Art:

The Church of the Assumption is built in rubble masonry. It has a Latin cross plan, a polygonal apse and a bell tower. You access the interior through a simple arched doorway on the same side as the epistle wall.

It is covered by a groin vault. Its furnishings include neo-Gothic altarpieces made of polychrome wood.

Nature:

Naturaleza Gorrontz-Olano

In Gorrontz-Olano you can find different varieties of trees, especially walnut and oak. As for wildlife, roe deer, wild boar, squirrels, genets and stone martens stand out. Given its proximity to the mountains, the chances of spotting one of these animals are higher than in other villages in Ultzama.

A proposal:

A lovely morning walk through beautiful Ultzama.
In Gorrontz–Olano we first need to find the path that leads up into the hills, located next to the old animal drinking trough, where the road ends and the woodland track begins.

This track will take us, among oaks and walnut trees, to Gelbentzu on a walk suitable for all. On arriving in Gelbentzu, we turn left and continue downhill until we reach a property that blocks the way.

Right there, we turn left (signposted Orgi) and continue descending until we join another path where we turn left, crossing through the wire fence. We continue along the track to the next junction, where we turn right. We keep going until we reach the road, and there we turn right.

After a few metres we reach a road/track crossroads. To the right is Orgi Forest; to the left, the road to Lizaso.

We first turn left (towards Lizaso) to see the “Balsa Verde” (Green Pond), then we return to the Orgi route, cross the road to skirt Orgi Forest and from there head to Lizaso and, finally, back to Gorrontz-Olano, where we pick up the car and finish the walk.

After the walk, it is worth visiting the renowned Orgi Restaurant in Lizaso. Its tasting menu specialises in Ultzama mushrooms.
