Urritzola-Galain

Let’s explore Urritzola-Galain

Known as the “balcony village” of Ultzama, Urritzola-Galain is a village in the merindad of Pamplona, 28 km from the city. The entrance to the village feels like a natural stroll, surrounded by wide green fields. Here you can enjoy a beautiful scene full of animals, from gentle cows to wild deer and boar.

Leaving this lovely approach behind, we come to the first and only neighbourhood of Urritzola: Galain. Here, large rustic houses stand out, in keeping with local architecture, with beautiful flowered balconies and excellent arched doorways. To finish the walk, we reach Urritzola, a village whose name means “ground of hazel trees” (translated from Basque).

Here you will find beautiful houses and a variety of trees, at the start of the hillside.

Pueblo Urritzola-Galain

History / Art:

Urritzola-Galain is a small village with a very rich history. It was a royal lordship that was unified by charter under King Sancho VII “the Strong”.

The church is a medieval-origin temple in Gothic style. The altarpiece is Baroque, from the first half of the 18th century. The baptismal font is medieval, from the 13th century, and belongs to the early Gothic period.

Nature:

Naturaleza Urritzola-Galain

This is an idyllic village where you will find endless shades of green, from the entrance to the boundary with neighbouring areas. It is full of animals of all kinds, sizes and colours.

In the neighbourhood you will find many Frisian cows and Latxa sheep. You may also see hens and all kinds of four-legged animals such as goats and rabbits.

A proposal:

One of the most peaceful and wonderful routes is the ascent to Mount Epaizburu (837 m). The route starts in the Urritzola square. There is no way to get lost: there is only one path up the mountain.

At the start, splendid views of the valley surprise you. The climb will likely be your first close encounter with rural life, passing a borda with goats and hens. The climb is steep. Remember: do not leave the track until you reach Mendigain.

Mendigain marks the start of Mount Epaizburu and is easy to recognise:

When you arrive at Mendigain and look ahead, you will see two beautiful green fields side by side. Next to them, the track curves left. To climb Epaizburu, you must leave the track by turning right and enter a dense beech forest. There are small paths in the woods. Keep heading uphill and you will reach the top of Epaizburu. From the summit you can see many villages in the area, such as Olagüe, Lantz and Ziaurritz.

The summit of Epaizburu is ideal for a family snack seated on the ground. Be careful not to get lost and follow the path. We descend by the same trail we used for the ascent, enjoying the landscape that was behind us on the way up.
