One of the most peaceful and wonderful routes is the ascent to Mount Epaizburu (837 m). The route starts in the Urritzola square. There is no way to get lost: there is only one path up the mountain.
At the start, splendid views of the valley surprise you. The climb will likely be your first close encounter with rural life, passing a borda with goats and hens. The climb is steep. Remember: do not leave the track until you reach Mendigain.
Mendigain marks the start of Mount Epaizburu and is easy to recognise:
When you arrive at Mendigain and look ahead, you will see two beautiful green fields side by side. Next to them, the track curves left. To climb Epaizburu, you must leave the track by turning right and enter a dense beech forest. There are small paths in the woods. Keep heading uphill and you will reach the top of Epaizburu. From the summit you can see many villages in the area, such as Olagüe, Lantz and Ziaurritz.
The summit of Epaizburu is ideal for a family snack seated on the ground. Be careful not to get lost and follow the path. We descend by the same trail we used for the ascent, enjoying the landscape that was behind us on the way up.
