Eltzaburu

Let’s explore Eltzaburu

Eltzaburu is a small village full of charm. It is set in a privileged environment, surrounded by endless green meadows and mountains. Nearby are the villages of Ilarregi, Suarbe, Iraizotz, Auza and Alkotz. All of them can be seen from the beautiful viewpoint on the climb up Mount Arburu, located in the village itself.

We enter Eltzaburu from Auza along a narrow road. On the right you can see a lovely stud farm, and on the left spectacular meadows where the area’s impressive livestock graze: horses, cattle, sheep and pigs. Eltzaburu is where the famous Ultzama veal is raised, produced among others by Mikel Erroz, owner of Biga Ultzama. In addition to veal, Eltzaburu also stands out for breeding thoroughbred horses at the stud farm.

Naturaleza Eltzaburu

The Haras de Ulzama stud farm covers 143 hectares between the villages of Auza and Eltzaburu. Oak woods, meadows and a beautiful lagoon create an exceptional and idyllic environment for rest and the breeding of thoroughbreds.

In 1971, the Society for the Promotion of Horse Breeding leased the land where the stud farm is located. At that time, the estate was largely covered with bracken, scrub and oak. A major conversion was carried out to turn these lands into meadows, along with the construction of a dam and reservoir with a capacity of 120,000 cubic metres to ensure the necessary and constant level of moisture in the ground. It was also necessary to remove excess water, given the rainy climate at certain times of year, so the meadows were drained. All this involved moving at least 10,000 cubic metres of earth.

At Haras de Ulzama, great stallions have stood such as Maspalomas, Terborch, Donagua, Quinault, Rheffissimo and Dyhim Diamond, among others. Great champions were born and raised in its pastures, such as La Novia, Canaletto, Robertiya (a leader of her generation at two and three years old and considered one of the best broodmares born in Spain: Volvoreta, winner of the Prix Vermeille (Gr. I) and third in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe), and Egeo (placed in Group 2 and later a stallion at the stud), as well as Salaam (together with Teresa and La Cibeles, the only Spanish mare placed in Group 3), Villablanca, Kashwan (Group 2 placed), Persian Ruler (Group 3 winner in France), and others.

A proposal:

In Eltzaburu you can enjoy hiking along the many tracks and footpaths, through meadows and forests of beech and oak.

The hills around Eltzaburu hide several treasures. You can visit a beautiful centuries-old oak in the Autsiberri area. It is a tree with a thick trunk and an open crown that reaches a great height. It was declared a Natural Monument in 1991 and was damaged by lightning around 20 years ago.

Besides this treasure, you can also find Aldategiko Borda, in the Otsamendi area. This is one of the last surviving examples of wooden construction in Navarre. It is a unique example in Europe from that period and style. At the end of the walk, you can have a vermouth at the village inn, next to the square.

Here is a similar example to the “Las cuatro bordas” route.
