In 1996, Ry Cooder travelled to Cuba to record an album with Ibrahim Ferrer and with the musicians who had collaborated on the album Buena Vista Social Club, known in Cuba as the super grandfathers. Filmmaker Wim Wenders observed the musicians in the studio and traced their lives in Havana. He later filmed in Amsterdam, where the band gave two concerts, and finally in New York, during a spectacular recital at the legendary Carnegie Hall.
