Iraizotz

Let’s explore Iraizotz

If you want to get lost among beautiful mountains, endless fields or deep forests, then Iraizotz is without doubt one of the places to visit.

Iraizotz is a small village located in the north of Navarre, in the Ultzama Valley.

To get there, you will travel along roads lined with dense trees, large farmhouses and rivers of striking beauty. You can reach the village from several roads: one comes from Pamplona and, via Zenotz, arrives in Iraizotz. The second comes from Larraintzar and passes by the houses at the far end of the village. Finally, there is the road coming from Arraitz via Alkotz. You can park in front of the village square, or continue uphill and park by the church.

Remember that Iraizotz is the village with the largest population in the area. You will see the typical large farmhouses of northern Navarre, with balconies decorated with flowers. A fronton and a tavern in its small square are a must.

History / Art:

At the entrance there is a lovely fountain, a symbol of the village. It is a rustic fountain made of stone and cement, formerly used as a drinking trough for livestock. To the right is the village square, which has a great atmosphere and an inn where you will find excellent pintxos and a weekday and weekend set menu. Behind the inn there is a beautiful stone washhouse where, in the past, villagers came down to wash their clothes.

Continuing past the washhouse, we find a beautiful meadow with a charming wooden playground. The park is surrounded by huge fields filled with different animals. The village is full of stone houses, made colourful by the flowers that decorate their balconies.

Nature:

Naturaleza Iraizotz

In Iraizotz there are many types of trees and animals. Wild boar and elegant deer are among the few animals that hide in the high hills and forests around the village. A deep and beautiful river runs through here, giving its name to the valley: the Ultzama River. If you wish, you can take a dip in its cold, crystal-clear waters.

A proposal:

We leave Iraizotz to visit, first of all, the millenary oak of Orkin.

Along paths and tracks we skirt the ridge, which we will later climb, passing through Lozen and Orkin until we reach the foot of the millenary oak, listed as a Natural Monument of Navarre since 2009. Immense and isolated in the middle of an estate, its huge rugged trunk, ancient knots and height leave us amazed.

We return to a junction that takes us to the summit of Arañotz. Among beech trees, oaks and others—still holding leaves in many hues—we reach its geodetic vertex. The valley is not visible, as the viewpoint is surrounded by beech woodland and mist.

From there we head south to the Hermitage of Santa Lucía, set in the middle of a vast green meadow. Continuing in the same direction, a quick descent takes us to the village of Eltso. We approach its church and admire its beautiful houses. From there we take a track that leads us to Zenotz, another unhurried stop to enjoy its stone manor houses—true works of rural architecture.

On the local trail NA-305 we head towards Iraizotz, first along a track that becomes a beautiful leaf-carpeted path of autumn beech, oak, birch and hazel. A delicious couple of kilometres takes us back to the starting point.
