Arraitz-Orkin

Let’s explore Arraitz-Orkin

Arraitz-Orkin is a village located in the merindad of Pamplona, within the Ultzama Valley. It can be reached from two different directions: from the NA-121 side and from Alkotz (the neighbouring village). Both approaches are beautiful and inspiring, surrounded by endless greens and stunning landscapes rich in biodiversity.

Arraitz is divided into three areas: Ventas de Arraitz, the Orkin neighbourhood, and the village itself. Ventas de Arraitz lies next to the NA-121 road at the start of the Belate pass. The entrance to Orkin is a little before the village entrance when coming from the NA-121.

Arraitz is laid out in a kind of radiocentric structure: the church is the centre, and the other houses are arranged around it, creating a gentle and welcoming atmosphere.

Pueblo Arraitz-Orkin

History / Art:

The village parish church, known as the Church of the Assumption, stands out for its Latin cross ground plan and ribbed vaults.

Inside, a 17th-century carving of Our Lady of the Rosary is preserved, as well as a monstrance dated to around 1800. Also very interesting is the group of palace-style houses with hipped roofs and three openings per storey.

Nature:

Naturaleza Arraitz-Orkin

The majestic specimen stands in a nearby meadow close to the Orkin neighbourhood and is listed as one of the 47 monumental trees in Navarre. Its imposing presence draws attention from far away.

Judging by its robust appearance, it easily justifies the label “millenary”.

On the meadow it has a broad base of impressive roots, supporting a solid trunk of approximately 10 metres in circumference.

Its venerable appearance enhances the meadow and the surrounding landscape.

A proposal:

On this occasion we propose a beautiful walk with almost no elevation gain through the northern part of the Ultzama Valley, visiting two top-tier natural monuments—two of the must-sees in Navarre.

Although they are relatively close to each other, we suggest a longer route through the area to fully enjoy this rightly renowned valley.

We start in the village of Arraitz, where we leave the vehicle and follow a clockwise circular route that ends at the Abauntz Cave.

To reach it, there is a short scramble over rocks while holding onto ropes, which makes it unsuitable for all visitors. After about 50 metres we reach the cave entrance, protected by a metal gate, beneath which it should be fairly easy to access the interior. The cave is quite deep. The access alone is impressive and well worth it.

In this cave the so-called Abauntz Map was found, now in the Museum of Navarre. It depicts the surrounding area and animals carved on a limestone slab, dated to around 10,000 BC.

Returning to the village, we take a completely flat track to the nearby hamlet of Orkin. Close to it, surrounded by storybook pastures and meadows, we find the millenary oak of Orkin, a unique specimen.

After the visit, we retrace our steps back to the car, completing an excursion suitable for all types of visitors.
