On this occasion we propose a beautiful walk with almost no elevation gain through the northern part of the Ultzama Valley, visiting two top-tier natural monuments—two of the must-sees in Navarre.
Although they are relatively close to each other, we suggest a longer route through the area to fully enjoy this rightly renowned valley.
We start in the village of Arraitz, where we leave the vehicle and follow a clockwise circular route that ends at the Abauntz Cave.
To reach it, there is a short scramble over rocks while holding onto ropes, which makes it unsuitable for all visitors. After about 50 metres we reach the cave entrance, protected by a metal gate, beneath which it should be fairly easy to access the interior. The cave is quite deep. The access alone is impressive and well worth it.
In this cave the so-called Abauntz Map was found, now in the Museum of Navarre. It depicts the surrounding area and animals carved on a limestone slab, dated to around 10,000 BC.
Returning to the village, we take a completely flat track to the nearby hamlet of Orkin. Close to it, surrounded by storybook pastures and meadows, we find the millenary oak of Orkin, a unique specimen.
After the visit, we retrace our steps back to the car, completing an excursion suitable for all types of visitors.
