Hiking and trekking

Tire your legs and then indulge in Ultzama’s gastronomy

Hiking is synonymous with walking excursions, mainly along trails and paths. The level of difficulty is generally low. It is a blend of sporting and tourist activity that takes place primarily in natural environments.

Thanks to its simplicity, low risk and minimal cost, hiking is a nature sport well suited to a wide range of people.

Ultzama is ideal for this type of excursion. Whether as a couple, with family or in a group of friends, the valley offers a wide network of marked trails, allowing walks of all levels and destinations, either independently or with guided options such as those offered by the Ultzama Mycological Park.

We have selected several ideal routes for hiking here. These pleasant circuits run through the heart of the emblematic Ultzama Valley, along tracks, paths and even occasional stretches across open pastureland, offering all the ingredients of a delightful recreational walk.

From a natural perspective, you will be able to admire the authentic flora of Ultzama: oak groves, beech forests, scrubland and meadows. Any time of year is suitable, although early spring—when forests begin to bloom—and autumn—during mushroom season—are especially recommended. Please remember that all routes are within the Ultzama Mycological Park, and a permit is required to collect mushrooms.

We have aimed to keep the routes accessible, without excessive distances or steep slopes, although in certain areas it has been unavoidable to exceed these criteria.

The idea is to tire your legs and then enjoy the outstanding local gastronomy.

Cycling

Ciclismo en Ultzama

For lovers of two wheels, Ultzama is an ideal setting to combine sport, gastronomy and relaxation. There are circular routes, ideal paths for cycle tourists, and winding, lightly trafficked roads perfect for road cycling. Do you enjoy moving at a good pace without the stress of traffic? Then you are in luck: Ultzama is perfect to explore by bike.

The diversity of landscapes in our region offers terrain for everyone: endless flat stretches, rolling slopes, shady areas for hot summer days, dense forests, and an extensive network of natural paths connecting villages. The infrastructure is excellent and the views will surprise you. Do not hesitate—if you love pedaling, bring your bike.

Horse riding tourism

Ultzama stands out for its deep equestrian tradition. It is home to several riding centers offering horse rides, such as Hípica Ultzama. There are also stud farms dedicated to breeding purebred racehorses. The traditional “zaldi bideak”, or horse trails, are still used today for equestrian tourism.

We highlight route IE-008, which starts and ends at the Orgi Forest, declared a Recreational Natural Area in 1996. Passing through this privileged setting allows riders to enjoy meadows, oaks, ferns, heather, junipers and a wide variety of shrubs, as well as the area’s characteristic wildlife. Along this stretch, the trail runs close to the Ultzama River. After leaving the forest, the route follows communal paths surrounded by meadows and oak groves, heading north towards the Iruin path, later connecting with the Narbatazu path near the Ollaran stream. Shortly afterwards, it turns west and continues along a trail perpendicular to the Zazpiturrieta path. After crossing Eltzaburu and the Antzubil stream, the route heads south towards Ilarregi, approaching the Sasondo stream before reaching Larraintzar, circling the Orgi Forest and returning to the starting point. Along the way, the route passes through the villages of Lizaso, Iraizotz, Eltzaburu, Ilarregi, Suarbe, Auza and Larraintzar, allowing riders to appreciate the beauty of the landscape and the unique character of the valley’s villages. Golf

Club de golf

The Ulzama Golf Club was designed by architect Javier Arana, a renowned golf course designer. The defining feature of the course is the constant presence of oak trees, which put players’ skills to the test.

You can also enjoy golf in another format at the Lizaso Golf Center, a charming pitch & putt course that delights enthusiasts of this discipline, both for its layout and the landscapes that accompany every round.
